The Golden Compass Alethiometer Questions
For 100 points and the “Lyra Belaqua” achievement use the alethiometer to answer the questions from your journal. These will become easier to answer as you get more symbols, so check the symbol guide if you’re unsure on a symbol’s meaning and don’t have it. You can answer these questions as you progress through the story, but the quickest way is to go to “Extras” on the game’s main menu, select journal, and answer them that way.
Many of these questions are story related, and you should get the majority of them while progressing through the game if you talk to people, examine documents on desks, etc. Some, however, won’t unlock unless you perform certain actions in the game. Below you’ll find the questions, the answers and where you can unlock the questions:
Jordan College

Why does Uncle Asriel have to travel so much?
Symbols: Globe, Crocodile, Candle
Unlocked: Right when you begin the level the question is added.
Why do the Gobblers kidnap children?
Symbols: Serpent, Walled Garden, Baby
Unlocked: Talk to the second servant in the hallway, the one that sings the song with you, get success rating on the deception game to get the Question.
Everyone keeps talking about “Dust”. What exactly is it?
Symbols: Bird, Bee, Owl
Unlocked: After convincing the servant to get the tokay, head back around towards the statue, talk to the man sitting on the bench in the corner, complete his deception game to get the question.
Why did I stay at Jordan College all these years?
Symbols: Candle, Apple, Alpha & Omega
Unlocked: Complete the level to obtain this question.

I don’t trust Mrs. Coulter. What is she up to?
Symbols: Madonna, Bull, Marionette
Unlocked: Once you exit your room, try opening the door to Mrs. Caulter’s office right in front of you to get the question.
Why is the Golden Monkey so mean and frightening?
Symbols: Elephant, Serpent, Cornucopia
Unlocked: I replayed the level and redid the golden monkey vase fight then got the tub stopper and filled the tub. It could be either of these so fill the tub on your first playthrough, if you don’t get it then just replay the level to get it.
Why can Pan only get so far away before it hurts?
Symbols: Bird, Chameleon, Anchor
Unlocked: After the first fight with the Golden Money this question is unlocked.
Will I ever have to deal with that horrible woman again?
