Using a laptop as UMTS router to connect to Xbox Live

You know the thing: You’re visiting your {put-favorite-relative-here} house over the holidays and, because you won’t get bored to death with “when i was young…”-stories, drag your Xbox 360 to the location. problem is: he/she hasn’t got any internet connection and scouting for unsecured neighborhood w-lans is not only a painful task but also a “don’t-do-it”. why don’t you bring your laptop with a UMTS-stick and use it as a router? Here’s how:

1) set the laptop to a static IP like 192.168.0.1
2) adjust the subnet settings to 255.255.255.0
3) set up internet connection sharing of the UMTS connection to Local Area Network
4) connect your laptop with the Xbox with a good’ole crossover cable
5) set a static IP like 192.168.0.2 for the Xbox (manual settings)
6) adjust the subnet on the Xbox to 255.255.255.0
7) set the nameservers on the Xbox to your PC-IP (i.e. 192.168.0.1)
8) connect via UMTS with the internet
9) switch off any firewalls on laptop
10) connect to Xbox Live

ready to go! :-)

In case you want to connect to Xbox Live with a foreign IP (japanese, us-, german etc) to access the marketplace of the approriate country use ICS not with your actual internet connection but connect through a VPN. (there are dozens of VPN services available, just google them…;))
